To put it simple a mobilr ringtone is the sound your cell phone makes when you have a call! Don't get confused about the namings; cell phone ringtones, ringingtones, tones, ring tones, ringer tones, tunes, mp3 ringtones, music ringtones, melodies , Hi-Fi ringtones, Groovetunes, True tones, Real tones, midi ringtones, mega tones etc. - They all mean the same thing!

Polyphonic ringtones Polyphonic ringtones or MIDI ringtones were introdused in 2002. Back then not many phones supported the use of polyphonic ringtones. Most new phones can play polyphonic ringtones.
MIDI ringtones MIDI ringtones (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) enables the creation of polyphonic ringtones (musical compositions with differnet sounds). Polyphonic means that multiple tones can be played at the same time using instrument sounds such as guitar and drums, piano, etc.
MP3 ringtones The Beatniks audio technology can be integrated with MPEG codecs to play back MP3 files as ringtones. A clip from a real song on your cell phone. The BAE technology is cell phone manufacturers such as Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. The Nokia 7650 was one of the first cell phones to play BAE or MP3 ringtones.
Free ringtones You can get free ringtones to your cell phone if you compose your own ringtones. If you have a phone with a built in ringtone composer you can also compose your own free ringtones.
True tones True tones was launched by Nokia in 2003. Many web sites also talk about True tones or Real tones when they refer to ringtones that can have extra sounds in them like singing or other strange sounds.
Amr sound clips AMR (Adaptive Multi-rate Codec) files can be recorded using the phones built-in Recorder application. This way you can record yourself saying "Mums's calling" and assing the ringtone to "mum".
Nokia composer ringtones The Nokia 3210 was the first Nokia phone to use the composer ringtones. Composer ringtones are also used by other cell phone manufacturers. Composer phones have a built in ringtone composer and you can compose new ringtones directly on their keyboards.
Key press ringtones Key press ringtones can be directly entered into your phone. Itīs much easier to compose ringtones with the key press format compared to the composer format (phones with ringtone composer). You do not need to understand the special symbols that appear on the composer screen as a result.
RTTTL ringtones RTTTL stands for Ringtone Text Transfer Language and it is a format for coding the notes of a ringtone in a universal format. With special ringtone convertor programs RTTTL ringtones can be converted to other ringtone formats and uploaded to your cell phone via datacable or a infrared connection.
WAV ringtones On some cell phones you can listen to any WAV file. WAV files can be downloaded or copied from PC and can contain anything - voice, music etc.
SMS ringtones Nokia originally developed SMS to send short text messages between mobiles. Mobiles also use this technic to receive and send non-text information like graphics and ringtones. An sms ringtone can be sent to the phone via sms.
Ringtone converter Ringtone converters are programs or software that converts ringtones between different formats so that you can keypress or transfer (with a datacable or infrared connection) ringtones to your mobile phone.
