MIDI tones
Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) enables the creation of
polyphonic ringtones (musical compositions with differnet sounds). Polyphonic
means that multiple tones can be played at the same time using instrument
sounds such as guitar, drums, electronic piano, etc.
Midi ringtones
MIDI tones can be used as ringtones, message alert tones and as sound
effects in mobile phone games.
The first Nokia phone to use polyphonic MIDI tones was the Nokia 3510.
Most new Nokia, Motorola, Siemens, Samsung etc. mobile phones can
play MIDI ringtones.
Midi ringtones level 4
The Nokia 3510 supports playback for polyphonic MIDI level 4 content
(playback of 4 simultaneous notes). Other Nokia phones supporting
polyphony level 4 are Nokia 3510i, 5100, 6100, 6610, 6800, 7210 and
7250. The Nokia 6220 supports polyphony level 16.
The instrument bank of the above mentioned Nokia phones include 29
melodic and 14 percussive instruments. The phones also support (not
the Nokia 3510) SP-MIDI
ringtones (scalable polyphony).
Midi ringtones level 24
The Nokia 3650, 6600, 7650, 3300 and 6650 have support for polyphony
level 24 MIDI content. The instrument bank of the above mentioned
Nokia phones include 128 melodic and 47 percussive instruments.
The instrument bank of the above mentioned Nokia phones include 29
melodic and 14 percussive instruments. The phones also support (not
the Nokia 3510) sp-MIDI (scalable polyphony) content.
Download MIDI ringtones
Traditional monophonic ringtones for mobile phones are downloaded to
the phone as SMS messages. Polyphonic midi tones are downloaded over
MMS or WAP. Note that downloaded sp-midi tones cannot be sent to other
mobile phones.
